Last Sunday was the Gemüseschlacht (or vegetable battle) between Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain on the Oberbaumbrücke. After the two districts were bundled together in administrative reform to become the district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, it seems the battle is a way for residents to assert their pride in where they live. Participants were seen wheeling in trolleys of rotten tomatoes, bags of gherkins and bottles of tomato ketchup, amonst other arsenal. Many wore protective onesies, others opted for bunny suits or donned helmets with ‘UN’ painted on the side.
Despite a gallant effort from the Kreuzberg side, Team Friedrichshain had the numbers (and it seemed more packets of saurerkraut) and were proclaimed the victors.
