The downstairs area of one of my favourite Prenzlauer Berg bars. The name stems from the fact it was a coal cellar during GDR times, and as you can see it still very much looks like one – just slightly cleaner and with some beaten-up furniture thrown in.
When I first moved to Berlin, this downstairs area (there’s a wonderfully atmospheric bar upstairs) was taken over by Russian disco DJs every Wednesday for the ‘secret’ Mittwoch Club.
You needed a password to get in and the doorman was mostly there to stop people being too noisy when they were queuing or emerging, so they wouldn’t upset the neighbours. Guess that failed as the Mittwoch Club is sadly no more.
You can watch a video about the establishment and its history here.
