Treptow Crematorium was built between 1996 and 1998. It was designed by Axel Schultes with Charlotte Frank, who also designed the Chancellor‘s Office.
The highlight is the main hall, which has been compared to Stonehenge, the Mosque at Cordoba or the Great Hypostyle Hall at Karnak in Egypt.
Twenty-nine smooth concrete columns rise out of the ground at irregular intervals; their tops are crowned with halos of daylight that spills in from outside.
A mirror-like circular pool lies in the center of the columns.
Up to 12,000 cremations a year are carried out here: the crematorium’s main two functions—cremation and funeral ceremonies—take place on separate floors.
